The Human Mechanism
The importance of human dynamics in a production centric company

When TJ first laid down his vision to me in August 2021 I was in awe and in shock as he sequentially listed an ever-expanding list of use cases for the platform. I immediately knew I had to ensure that we captured all of his optimistic brilliance in a business model that would not only do the product justice, but would allow for rapid scalability in an ever-changing business environment. One of my tasks was to create a suitable culture on paper that would best suit the product and the people we wanted to employ. After hours of deliberation, I decided upon
  • Transparent & Accountable;
  • Fully Inclusive;
  • Sustainable;
  • Global & Decentralized
The reason behind these choices is self-explanatory. The world of DeFi solves many issues we currently run into in a centralized system. Corruption and foul play are at the top of the agenda when most people think of the large conglomerates that control huge portions of the world’s wealth. However, there is also a darker side to DeFi. Anonymity is a double-edged sword and on one hand you may control your finances but on the other if you make a simple mistake there is no one you can go to for support. On top of this risk, the perpetrators of rug pulls and scams wander freely among us with, on most occasions no recourse to their actions.

Transparent & Accountable

It was hugely important to inject as much integrity and moral courage into the genre in order to give our product as much credibility as possible but moreover to ensure our investors feel safe when purchasing $DEPO. Secondly, it is important to note that everyone makes mistakes, whether it be the wrong decision or an error, we are all human. In everyday life we are subjected to constant obvious and blatant lies from people in authority that they shamelessly cast across media outlets. There is little accountability for their actions in the public eye as they brazenly lie and cheat their way to powerful positions of authority. Knowing this information, it was of the utmost importance to me that if and when we make an error we stand up, apologize, fix it, complete an investigation into the how and why and then move on.

Fully Inclusive

Our world is littered with inequality, some deliberate and some subconscious. DeFi cuts through historic geographical boundaries with consummate ease and it was this concept that I wanted to capture and replicate at DEPO. We have a global audience so not only does it make sense to have a global team but we actively look for different cultures and nationalities to ensure we have the most well-rounded viewpoint as a business. This does not detract away from us recruiting based on meritocracy alone, but we do go looking for diversity in every facet of the business

If you are not aware of how close we are to wrecking this planet for future generations then you are in my opinion living in denial or in a cave. We are far from perfect but we are looking to partner with Ocean Clean Up charities and we aim to offset our carbon footprint in the near future.

Global & Decentralized

The team comprises of 12 different nations thus far and our aim is to have at least one ambassador in each country on the planet. We aim to run the platform as decentralized as humanly possible and we are completely and wholeheartedly invested in the concept of DeFi which we are huge advocates for. Using the agile principles as a base we wanted to ensure that we stuck to a system that would symbiotically adapt with the type of person we employed. in whatever role they were employed in a seamless manner that comes naturally to that individual.
For those of you who aren’t aware of the agile principles:
  1. 1.
    Our highest priority is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software.
  2. 2.
    Welcome changing requirements, even late in development. Agile processes harness change for customers’ competitive advantage.
  3. 3.
    Deliver working software frequently, from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, with a preference to the shorter time frame.
  4. 4.
    Business people and developers must work together daily through the project.
  5. 5.
    Build projects around motivated individuals. Give them the environment and support they need, and trust them to get the job done.
  6. 6.
    The most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation.
  7. 7.
    Working software is the primary measure of progress.
  8. 8.
    Agile processes promote sustainable development. The sponsors, developers, and users should be able to maintain a constant pace indefinitely.
  9. 9.
    Continuous attention to technical excellence and good design enhances agility.
  10. 10.
    Simplicity–the art of maximizing the amount of work not done–is essential.
  11. 11.
    The best architectures, requirements, and designs emerge from self-organizing teams.
  12. 12.
    At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly.
As you can see in summary the agile principles are product-centric with a primary focus on the people behind the product. As important as the product is, the welfare and motivation of the people behind it, is as important. With our globalized team we run into physical and mental barriers on a daily basis. It is my job to ensure that all parts of the machine are for a better analogy, well-oiled and functioning as efficiently as they can be. Below are just 5 challenges that we deal with on a daily basis

Mental Health

It’s of paramount importance that people are content and that stress is minimized. COVID-19 adds to increased stresses of everyone across the world, the uncertainty and unknown play on people’s minds affecting their engagement at work

A fine line to draw for a startup. Ensuring you have the right people to deliver the product costs money, but as a startup money is a very finite resource that needs to be managed carefully and growth needs to be proportionate. You need to create if possible a plethora of ways to create revenue streams in order to survive that critical first 12 months.

Working Hours

With the global nature of the business and global nature of the team managing meetings and calendars requires a high level of dedication and organization. It is paramount to ensure we cover our global community at all hours and this can increase stress and fatigue levels further.

Job Satisfaction

There is nothing better than waking up with a smile on your face and looking forward to completing tasks in your working day. It isn’t a hard concept to grasp that someone who enjoys their work will perform better than someone who doesn’t. Being enthusiastic and getting genuine buy-in is harder than it sounds but this makes a huge difference in remote business culture.

Cultural Differences

We are all raised in different ways. Different cultures, religions, struggles, desires and needs exist across the globe. It’s important that we understand what all our employees want and how to best tailor their employment to that need, so long as it doesn’t impact the overall business objectives. Understanding as much as you can about all your employees allows you to motivate them and incentivize them to best suit the company and the employee. This concept sounds simple but with all of the time zone barriers and remote nature of our work this takes constant work and adjustment.

Through all of these laid-out bullet points and headers the overall message is clear. You will never have success without people. Dedicated, hardworking, intellectually sound people. People are the core of every stage of the production process. Recruitment, coding, business development, customer support, marketing and most importantly, the consumer. Without people we are nothing, our product is nothing. Treating all these people with the dedication and respect they deserve will endear them to you. If you aren’t genuine, it will be impossible to fake, and you will be exposed for the fraud that you are. I am determined to not the let the cloak of decentralization hamper the sincerity and transparency that I will insist on through every fiber of the business.
